March 2017

Welcome to March! Okay winter, you have less than 3 weeks to get this out of your system.  The first day of spring is around the corner, so we’ll cut you some slack this week as you rally in attempt to go out with a bang.  To all our clients, family and friends, drive safe and stay warm, there is light at the end of this long snowy tunnel!  (Side note:  Has anyone else noticed that it gets abnormally warm only when we have our largest Ice and Snow Festivals happening??) Since spring is ready to shake out her hair and show her face anytime now, it’s also that time we tend to shake out the dust and start clearing things out.  Whether you are purging in preparation for a move, or doing so to freshen things up, here are some favorite tips to help get you started:

1.  Deep Clean Kitchen Appliances:  Use a specialty cleanser and cycle on the dishwasher (this should be done once a month).  Finally clean out the inside of the fridge (especially the drawers and the ’embarrassingly forgotten and buried at the back items’).  Give the "self clean" option on your oven a whirl (ensure you can still open windows to vent the room) and get rid of grease splatters on surrounding surfaces.

2.  Deep Clean the Washing Machine:  Disinfect with distilled white vinegar and baking soda.  Run the machine with hot water, add cleaning agents and allow to sit for 30-60 minutes.  Restart the machine, allow it to drain and then wipe dry.

3.  Wet Clean your Wood Floors:  Did you know that you should only "wet clean" hardwood every two months to avoid damaging them? For deep cleaning use a wood-cleaning product diluted according to the label instructions. Saturate a sponge or rag mop in the water, then wring it almost dry so it feels only slightly damp to the touch. Damp-mop the floor, being careful to prevent standing water on the floor. Rinse with a clean mop dampened in clear water, but only if the cleaning product requires it.

4.  Deep Clean the Carpets:  This should be done twice a year (every 18 months for bedrooms)  High traffic areas can be done 3-4 times year.  Do it not just for appearance, but for sanitary and health reasons.

5.  Clean Bathroom and Kitchen Tiles:  This should be done with a cleaner that has a "neutral pH".  You can prepare your own by using 1/2 cup baking soda mixed well into 2 gallons of water.  This mixture also works great on grout.

6.  The Closet Conundrum:  You need rules.  Give yourself some sort of limits (ie: If you didn’t wear it this season, it goes)  Same goes for shoes and accessories.  There are so many incredible not-for-profit charities that would make a great home for deserving outfits.  Also use the time to organize your wardrobe by color.

7.  Revive your Bedding:  Obviously, pillow cases and sheets should be done at least every two weeks.  The rest of your bedding should be done 2-3 times per year (always follow manufacturer’s labels)

8.  And while you’re at it.....The Mattress:  Use your vacuum’s crevice tool to clean the surface and then use an upholstery cleaner to spot treat.  Finish things off with a spritz of disinfectant spray.

9.  Keep the Furry Friends....Just not the Fur:  An easy solution to remove pet hair that has accumulated on furniture?  Rubber gloves!  Just put them on and dampen them to clear up the fuzzies.

10.  And My Personal Favorite:  Prep the Patio Furiture!!!  Nothing says warm weather like that first moment on the deck in the sunshine (which in Alberta is fair game in anything above 3 degrees.....which is also the time we break out the shorts, bikes and convertibles)  It’s as simple as a little dishsoap in water to wipe off the dust and then a spray with the garden hose to rinse.

It is the time of year where we see alot of homes entering the market.  If you are thinking of making spring 2017 the time for change, we are here to help you every step of the way.  Whether you have questions about current market trends, a headline or what your home is worth, our team takes pride in comprehensive knowledge and experience that will guide you and give you the professional answers you need.  We always appreciate your referrals and never take them for granted.
